Milky Day Shows His Raw & Emotional Side in the Healing EP ‘Impulses’

A rising Korean-New Zealander artist, known for his unique blend of R&B and soulful music, Milky Day is back with his latest emotionally-charged EP, Impulses. Released on August 21, Impulses serves as a poignant reflection on the tumultuous world observed through the artist's window during the confining grip of COVID-19 lockdowns; a shared experience that bound us all.

Milky Day's discography boasts a collection of notable songs like "You'll Be Alright" and "Take it Slow," both of which have combined plays of 47 million on Spotify alone. He has also collaborated with popular artists like Jimmy Brown, frad, Gareth.T, and Hayne.

Apart from being a talented singer-songwriter, Milky Day comes with a background in classical piano and a double major in Math and Music from Amherst College. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Milky Day’s reservoir of talent spreads far and wide as the cosmic expanse of the Milky Way galaxy.

Usually known for songs based on the theme of love, Milky Day tries to deflect and present his raw, honest side. The 5-track EP oscillates between presenting his personal struggles and questioning the purpose of life while grappling with impulses and consequences. The focus track, “Temptation,” is an internal dialogue questioning if he can be greater than his past self, battling the desire for growth while being trapped in a dark path. “Aura” dives into the consequences of these temptations and the struggle between fading desires, self-control, and desire for stability.

The track Losing My Grip sheds light on the aftermath of impulsive decisions. He also expresses feelings of confusion when one loses their purpose in life. What happens when you decide to let your old self go? Break free from the impulsive tendencies? And embrace the changes is explored beautifully in the track “Rest in Peace.” Concluding the EP on a positive note, “So Good” bids goodbye to negative thoughts, and talks about the idea of finding peace and looking forward to a brighter future with hope.

What we love about the EP is how it moves sequentially. From the beginning until the end, each track has its significance and place of order. When you finish listening to it, you have gone through the entire journey of self-discovery - giving in to temptations, losing control, struggling with the loss, embracing change, breaking free from the past, and finally being hopeful for the future.

Impulses is your free therapy that offers solace to its listeners and lets them know they are not alone in their struggles. Shedding light on the inspiration behind this EP, Milky Day said, “Through my observations and life experiences, I realized that everyone struggles with their own inner demons in some shape or form - so I've been exploring more general themes of life struggles and suffering through my music, as you'll hear in my upcoming EP.”
